My own view of the Eucharist is probably somewhere between Zwingli and Calvin. Nevertheless there is a great deal to be gained from reading Brant’s engagement with ancient Judaism and the Gospels both on the question of the Eucharist, but also a proper approach to reading the canonical Jesus in his context. Brant has given me a newfound appreciation for the Catholic doctrine. Reading his book I’ve come to see a biblical foundation for the view and while I am not convinced—this is a whole other issue related to conversion for to be convinced would mean a need to convert to Catholicism—on exegetical grounds, I now better understand and respect the view."

You don't have to be RC to believe in the Real Presence! =)Nicholashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12939345055574427000noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13840519.post-14774318312463739922011-04-04T01:45:45.981-05:002011-04-04T01:45:45.981-05:00I agree with Mike's comment that connecting Je...I agree with Mike's comment that connecting Jesus with His Jewish context is good but I do not see John 6 (or John for that matter) as "Eucharistic" at all. Jesus is announcing in a difficult passage just how central and authoritative His role is. Union to Him through loyalty (believing) is absolutely necessary and pushes all else...even Mosaic sensibilities aside. Consider Jesus' words in John 6:27,29 and here in v. 35; "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst."
If you have time, I would be very interested in your thoughts on my last 3 posts. http://www.personaldiscipleship.blogspot.com/

Thank You for this informative and thought provoking post.
-Jeffjeff millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16001733141768083682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13840519.post-75273791631704423972011-04-03T08:43:56.324-05:002011-04-03T08:43:56.324-05:00Anyone who draws out the connections between Jesus...Anyone who draws out the connections between Jesus and the Jewish context of His life (including, most notably, the effect of what we call the Old Testament on His life), has done us a great service.
